Summer’s Best Travel Deals, Near and Far

28 Jun

If you’re anything like me, and every other New Yorker I know, the thought of spending most summer weekends in the city is nothing short of anxiety provoking. With excessive heat literally oozing from every building in existence and no way to hit the beach without the hideous traffic or too-uncomfortable-for-words subway ride in beach gear, staying organized and well-informed about any potential vacations can feel like a full time job.

Luckily for you, the sun’s permanent presence these days has heightened my vacation wishes and led to this elongated round-up of the summer’s best travel plans. For some, a getaway might simply mean a hotel in a different neighborhood than yours. Others may fantasize about another USA locale or a beautiful Caribbean beach. And the real big dreamers (with big paychecks) think Europe. Well, there is something for everyone this summer so let’s start with the east coast and work our way towards your Italian ambitions.

Nashville, TN

Nashville is the perfect in-country getaway! Walk the same halls where Elvis recorded, visit the Grand Ole Opry where Cash sang, or have a beer and a burger at the famous honky tonks. Plus, the city’s versatility makes it an obvious choice for any last minute trip; you can go for two days or two weeks, and there are different attractions suitable for a girls’ weekend, guys’ getaway or a family vacation.

It’s pretty hard to choose my favorite part about Nashville, and with the All Access Pass, you won’t have to make that tryingly difficult choice either. For $50, you can choose 4 must-see attractions from a long list of activities. Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and grab a back stage tour at the Grand Ole Opry. Or, travel off the beaten path and sip wine at the beautiful Belle Mead Plantation and soak in the southern-ness with a Redneck Comedy Tour. Visit to combine this All Access Pass with a hotel, or find another vacation package to suit your Deep South desires.

St. Pete/Clearwater, Florida

The 35-mile stretch of beach between St. Pete and Clearwater has broken Guinness World Records for consecutive days of sun and was recently noticed by as home to four of the best beaches in the US. And despite this natural draw for visitors, they only seem to be heightening their desirability with the “100 Days of Summer” campaign.

They’ve not only provided a day-by-day calendar with events like hang gliding, sky surfing, and a series of concerts by famed musicians Billy Idol, Martina McBride and Carly Rae Jepsen (to name a few), but they are also offering resort and hotel deals averaging 23 percent less than their peak March rates. Just a 30 minute drive from Tampa International Airport and home to the highly distinguished Dali Museum, this neighborhood as been beloved by families, friends and honeymooners alike as a prime vacation spot.

The amazing deals being offered include romantic bed and breakfasts with champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries, hotels with unlimited water sports, complimentary nights at resorts and even an “MLB Pitcher’s Package.” To find out what exactly a pitcher’s package includes and to view a full list of their many lodging deals, visit

“Aruba, Jamaica, ooo I wanna take you to Bermuda, Bahama…” Ok, I don’t actually personally want to take you, but put that song on, whip yourself up a daiquiri and get ready for these amazing Caribbean vacation deals!

Just like the song, let’s start with Aruba. The Hyatt Regency Aruba is celebrating their location outside the hurricane belt as hurricane season sets in with a variety of special deals, starting with rates as low as $350. Plus, guests booking their vacation this summer get the fifth night free! Families who need two rooms need not fret either, as the Hyatt’s special package also gives 50% off an additional room for children 18 years old or under.

Even better than the low rates is what you get to do once you’re there! Enjoy the resort’s multi-level pool complex with its’ three-story waterslide, water sports like scuba diving and snorkeling, or the on-site casino. Mexicado, Aruba’s first authentic Mexican restaurant just opened on-site and the recently revealed 5,200 square-foot ZoiA Spa features indoor and outdoor luxurious spa treatments. And of course, every vacation requires a swim-up bar. Or they should. The Hyatt Regency doesn’t disappoint with its recently renovated Balashi Bar, located in the complex’s three-story pool.

Puerto Rico

You’ve heard of restaurant week–the best of all weeks, in my own personal opinion. But now there seems to be competition with the First Annual Hotel Week Caribe. The same people who brought you January’s Hotel Week NYC are now presenting 40% off lodging deals in Puerto Rico from August 1- 31, 2013. The rates will be based on a tier system, with prices of $100, $150, $200, or $250. See full rates and contact details below:

Who doesn’t dream of fresh mozzarella, sailing the Mediterranean, designer clothing and lush hotels? I’m sure there are people who don’t, but certainly no one I want to know, because these images are the very pieces of my travel yearnings. Hlemmur Square Opens in Iceland

21 Jun

Let’s face it: summer in the concrete jungle is tough. Sweltering subway stations, cramped apartments and limited pool options beckon a vacation to somewhere far away with a cool breeze and cooler culture.

Enter Iceland’s Hlemmur Square, a new hotel in Reykjavik from European hotelier Klaus Ortlieb (Claridge’s in London, The Gotham Hotel in New York City, The Hotel Modern in New Orleans) that combines affordable and chic hostel rooms with luxury hotel accommodations under one roof.

Hlemmur Square

The hotel was named for the central meeting spot that once served as a watering hole for travelers and their horses. Built in the 1930s, the five-story building embraces modern design elements while maintaining the historical relevance behind its title.

Bonus: most of the hotel rooms feature balconies where guests can take in the surrounding scenery—which most likely beats your current view of the neighbor’s fire escape.

Hlemmur Square, Laugavegur 105, 105 Reykjavik, Iceland
Rooms are available now at special preview rates and the full opening is slated for late summer.

Downton Abbey Getaways on Both Sides of the Atlantic

13 Jun

If you are one of millions of viewers who have been swept away with the parlor room drama and torrid romances of Downton Abbey, you might be suffering from withdrawal after the dramatic end to last season. Unfortunately, the fourth season will not premiere stateside until January, which leaves fans with six months worth of Sunday nights without the Crawleys. Surviving until the winter might just be easier with these Downton-inspired getaways:

For a luxurious vacation, Rocco Forte’s Brown’s Hotel is already an ideal option, but for those feeling nostalgic, it is even better. In celebration of its 175th anniversary, the hotel is offering a Highclere Castle Vintage British Summer Day Package, which gives guests the opportunity to venture to Highclere Castle, the primary filming location of Downton Abbey, in their choice of stylish vintage automobile from Lords Cars. After spending the day basking in the gorgeous estate and grounds, guests will return to the hotel and enjoy a “Timeless” cocktail at the Donovan Bar, and then perhaps curl up with their free copy of Lady Carnarvon’s Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey. This package is available from Sunday to Thursday between July 14th and September 12th, 2013, with rates starting at $1100 per night for two people.

Another option at Brown’s is the Vintage British Summer Suite Package, which includes:
-4 nights accommodation in a suite
-Complimentary one-way airport transfer in a vintage Daimler Limousine
-Daily breakfast for two at HIX Mayfair
This is available between July 15th and September 8th, 2013, with rooms starting at $770 per night for two people in a Junior Suite.

If interested in seeing the actual village of Downton, take a day trip to Bampton in Oxfordshire, just two hours from London. As a result of its newfound fame, the town has a website with a thorough account of its unique history and culture. Spending a day walking through the streets where Lady Sybil got hurt during a political rally or seeing Matthew and Isobel’s cottage is sure to please any Downton fan, and the town itself has a number of events around which it might be fun to plan a visit. Most notable of these is the Gardening Club Annual Show in August, reminiscent of the competitions seen on Downton Abbey (will Lady Violet win again this year?).

For those willing to travel a little further north in the United Kingdom, Scotland’s Inveraray Castle is not to be missed. Fans will recognize it as the home of Lord Grantham’s cousin, Shrimpie, and the site of the season three finale. The manor is located in Argyll, about sixty miles northwest of Glasgow, and is already a great attraction because of its 60,000-acre span of green and gardens. During the warmer months, guests pay $15.50 for access to the grounds and castle.

Much, much closer to home is Lady Mendl’s Tea Salon at The Inn at Irving Place, located in one of the most picturesque corners of Manhattan. The lush, extravagant interiors will transport visitors to the time of Downton Abbey and further back into the 1800s. For $40, guests can enjoy a five-course afternoon tea menu comprised of finger sandwiches and scones with clotted cream and jams, and choose from an array of fine teas. Reservations are required, so call ahead!

For a day trip, Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown cannot be beat. After a scenic forty-five minute ride up the Hudson on Metro-North, enjoy the Victorian Gothic architecture and interiors of Lyndhurst. The sixty-seven acres surrounding the mansion are great for picnicking or walking along the river, and it is easy to understand why Jay Gould, one of the most hated men during his lifetime, chose it as his retreat from society. Much like Lady Cora, Gould’s daughter, Anna, took her wealth to Europe and married a European aristocrat (or two, if you want to get specific). Entrance to the grounds is $12 and tours of the mansion take place hourly for $14.

Happy travels!
